During the belle epoque period Lake Lavarone has been an important an very popular holiday destination for Vienna's elite. Already Sigmund Freud, founder of the psychoanalysis used to spend his study as well as his leisure time here. Indeed, the lake is a true natural jewel. Wonderfully surrounded by unique meadows and forests, it inspires visitors again and again.
According to an ancient legend, the lake has been created by a deity, in order to punish two brothers arguing over a forest. The deity therefore decided to sink the forest and to flow it with water. And as any other legend also this one hides a little truth. The lake originated after a carstic doline which got naturally filled. The lake's bottom, which is in about 17 metres in depth, hosts the fossilised remains of the former fir forest.
During hot summer months Lake Lavarone turns into a wonderful bathing lake featuring also 2 very nice beaches, while during winter months they do organize several diving courses on the iced lake.
